Objectives

IDEO 16-17 has four major thrusts:

  • Provide increased support to 16 and 17 year olds in order to better help them stay in school. This support is delivered alongside measures, strategies and programs offered by the education system or other instances.
  • Provide increased support to 16 and 17 year olds in order to better help them get into gear (pre-employability, level-entry studies, level-entry qualifications, job market entry, etc.)
  • Provide support that focuses on a course of action enabling 16 and 17 year olds to develop social, occupational and personal self-sufficiency
  • Develop and trial test local partnerships for joint action with schools, school boards, and public agencies and community organizations that offer services to 16 and 17 year olds.

Examples of services offered to 16 and 17 year olds:

  • Sports and cultural activities
  • Visits to community centres and libraries
  • Self-awareness workshops
  • Mental health and family planning support
    (pregnancy and termination of pregnancy)
  • Assistance in solving financial problems
  • Support for victims of violence or abuse or for youths with violence or abuse issues
  • Support in solving judicial problems (community work or petitions for pardon)
  • Learning of communication and problem-solving strategies
  • Development of attitudes for keeping a job or staying in school
  • Development of basic social skills
  • Career and academic counselling
  • Assistance in developing motivation and perseverance
  • Assistance in overcoming obstacles to participation
  • Assistance in making contacts with employers
  • Workshops on job-search tools and techniques
  • Training for acquiring skills such as operating a cash register, customer services, introduction to computers, or health and occupational safety services
  • Learning a trade in a not-for-profit organization
  • On-the-job supervised work experience
  • Student auditor (student for a day)
  • Job shadowing
  • Formulas for occupational tutoring or mentoring
  • Career exploration laboratory
  • Volunteer activities
  • Schooling
  • Access to employment projects
  • Participation in various youth initiatives, such as Connexion compétence, Chantiers jeunesse or opportunities for working abroad (OFQJ/OQAJ), developed by community or employability organizations or government agencies
